A piece of cake
The business of Quinceañera parties in Latin America is a dynamic and growing sector, reflecting both cultural significance and economic impact. A Quinceañera is more than just a birthday celebration; it is a deeply rooted tradition marking a girl’s transition from childhood to womanhood, comparable in importance to a wedding.
The cultural significance of Quinceañera parties cannot be overstated. In Latin American societies, these celebrations are a pivotal rite of passage for young girls. They honour the values and traditions that bind families and communities, reinforcing a shared cultural legacy.
This profound cultural importance translates into significant financial investment, as families spare no expense in creating memorable experiences. “Around 1 million Quinceañera celebrations take place in Mexico each year,” informed an event planning manager. “A standard celebration can range from 150 thousand to 200 thousand pesos.”

In Argentina, for instance, the costs can range from 3 million to over 10 million pesos (approximately USD 8,000 to USD 27,000), depending on the scale of the celebration. This figure includes expenses for venue rental, which can reach up to 1.5 million pesos (USD 3,600) in major urban centres like Buenos Aires and Rosario.
Additionally, catering can add another 1-2 million pesos (USD 2,400 to USD 4,800) to the budget, while high-quality decorations and entertainment often exceed 500,000 pesos (USD 1,200). The overall cost of a Quinceañera can thus easily surpass USD 30,000 in some cases, and “many families save for years to make the party possible,” elaborated the event manager.
Economically, Quinceañera parties represent a significant revenue stream for event companies in Latin America, “although there has been a decline in interest in quinceañeras,” reported the manager. Another event manager with over 15 years of experience also concurred, “In capital cities and higher socio-economic strata, the tendency has diminished a little, as the quinceañeras and their families prefer smaller celebrations.”
However, the sector’s importance is evident in its substantial contribution to local economies. The COVID-19 pandemic presented some challenges, “but the impact could have been greater; in fact, a large majority of clients preferred to postpone their events to more favourable dates so as not to lose deposits and advance payments,” responded the event manager. “What was different is that many had a smaller audience than originally expected.”
During COVID-19, the event industry in Mexico experienced a staggering drop of approximately USD 1.5 billion in revenue. The pandemic’s impact was a stark reminder of the sector’s vulnerability to global disruptions. Yet, as pandemic restrictions were lifted, the industry showed resilience and began a robust recovery. By mid-2022, there was a notable resurgence, with industry reports indicating a 50% increase in event bookings compared to the previous year.
This rebound was particularly pronounced in countries like Mexico and Colombia, where the events industry has seen a resurgence of around USD 500 million in new bookings. “Many 15th birthday parties became sweet sixteen or even 17th birthday parties. Many families saw this as a way to regain some normality and, in a way, compensate their daughters for the lapse in their lives with the closure of activities,” informed the experienced event manager.
Looking ahead, the Quinceañera market is poised for continued expansion. Projections suggest a steady annual growth rate of 6-8% over the next five years. Rising disposable incomes and a growing preference for high-profile, personalised events fuel this growth. As the event manager acknowledged, “The new trends have to do with greater use of technology for celebrations and more personalised parties, where nature themes, special and modern dresses and very personal styles are at the forefront.”
For example, in Brazil, the average expenditure on Quinceañera parties has increased by 12% annually, reflecting a shift towards more elaborate celebrations. An organiser of 15th birthday expos in CDMX and Guadalajara also noted a new phenomenon, “for some years now, there has been more and more interest in having an equivalent party for sons, which has opened a new market that can be quite profitable.” He continued, “A few months ago, a party in Monterrey went viral, with a young man who went all out by inviting actresses, influencers and regional Mexican music bands, and we will see more and more of these parties.”

The business of Quinceañera parties in Latin America is a vibrant and economically significant sector. The event manager agreed, “15th [Quinceañera] birthdays are a highly sought-after event sector.” However, the manager from another company dedicated to the organisation of events disagreed and stressed, “It depends on the region of the country and the economic condition.” Adding, “From my point of view, the events linked to marriages and weddings generate the most income.”
The sector has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability. The event manager aptly noted, “Since last year, companies and the events sector have significantly strengthened, and this positive momentum is set to continue.” This forward-looking perspective underscores a robust capacity for growth and innovation in the face of challenges, promising an upbeat future for the industry. ¡Celebrémoslo!
